Violin bridge blank comparison of blank to fitted violin bridge marking approximate height of bridge on blank
As all violins are different, an over sized bridge known as a blank is used and worked to match the violin. A bridge blank with an old worked bridge to show the difference. I start by marking an approximate height and removing the excess wood, this is still much too high.
comparison in thickness once most excess height has been taken off blank violin bridge violin bridge feet must fit perfectly the increased dark areas show better fitting feet
The difference in thickness between the blank and worked bridge is very clear. Starting to fit the bridge feet which must match the curve of the violin belly perfectly, the dark areas show where the feet make contact As excess wood is removed more and more of the bridge is in contact with the belly

marking the thickness along the top of the bridge correct string height is essential basic finished violin bridge
The scribe line (here I have added pencil to make it more visible) shows the final thickness of the bridge top, the front is now worked to remove excess wood. Next the string height must be adjusted, here it can be seen the bridge is too high. Now the bridge is ready for a test run before it is full cleaned up, to check the balance of sound and playability.
